Wind Tolerant Plants for Pots and Containers

Recently a few clients have asked about wind tolerant plants for pots. They live in apartments and the only outdoor space is on their decks, which are hammered by the lovely Easterlies that frequently visit us here in Ōrewa! So here are some ideas for wind tolerant container gardens:

Ideally have a layer of wind tolerant screening plants – think flax, echium, pittosporum, large grasses. They will act as a wind-break for smaller pots in front.

If your pots are large enough, it can be fun to layer them up with a Thriller (the feature plant), a Filler and a Spiller (a flowering or trailing plant that will spill over the edge). The larger the plant, the larger the container it will need. A pot that is too small for the plant will restrict its roots and the plant will dry out faster.

Here are some beautiful wind tolerant plant ideas that will work in pots and containers on balconies. This is a very purple / white / blue colour palette because that is what my client wanted but you could totally mix the colours up!
